Introduction to the case

Before we get into the worst botched executions in the USA, what is a botched execution? A botched execution is a situation where the process of carrying out a death sentence, which is either by lethal injection, electric chair, or other methods, goes wrong. This results in a prolonged, painful, or inhumane death. A death that is supposed to be painless and happens swiftly makes the victim suffer painfully. There are several scenarios of these botched executions, like the victim being administered the wrong dosage of lethal injection during the execution. Sometimes the electric chair does not work properly, or unanticipated side effects or complications occur during the execution.

1. Randy Lynn Wools

Randy Lynn Wools murdered Betty Stotts, who was a drive-in theater worker. Although he was remorseful for his crimes, he was executed. Randy was under the influence of Valium the day he murdered Betty. During his execution, he assisted the medical technicians in finding his veins to administer the lethal injection because finding his veins was difficult because of his collapsed veins from drug use.

2. Thomas Grasso 

Thomas Grasso in 1995 was convicted for murdering Hilda Johnson, who was 87 years old at the time. He strangled Hilda in Tulsa in December of 1990 and murdered 81-year-old Leslie Holtz in New York in 1991. He was executed by lethal injection in Oklahoma. But the execution was botched when the IV line became dislodged, causing Grasso to experience intense pain and convulsions before his death.

3. Pedro Medina 

Another botched execution in the USA is that of Pedro Luis Medina. In Florida, he was executed by electric chair because he murdered a 52-year-old woman in Orlando. Medina’s execution was botched When he erupted in flames on his head which delayed the execution for 7 minutes.

4. Allen Lee Davis

In 1999 Allen Lee Davis was convicted for the murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters in Florida. He was executed by electric chair in Florida. However, several controversies surrounded his electrocution because witnesses claimed that blood not only leaked from his nose but that he was still alive after the power was turned off. He was the last person to be executed by electric chair electrocution in Florida because subsequently death by lethal injection has been used.

5. Clayton Lockett 

In 2014 Clayton Lockett was convicted for multiple crimes which ranged from first-degree murder to rape among others.  He was executed in̈ Oklahoma by a lethal injection but there are stories that the execution was botched. Lockett is claimed to have suffered physical distress, and convulsions and attempted to stand up from the table even when he was declared unconscious and dead.

6. Joseph Wood 

Joseph Rudolph Wood was executed on 23rd July. 2014 after being convicted of murder. The execution happened at Florence State Prison in Arizona.  He was executed by a lethal injection that happened for two hours. His execution was botched because he started snorting and gasping before dying after two hours.

7. Dennis McGuire 

in 2014 the execution of Dennis McGuire happened in Ohio. But it took nearly 40 minutes for him to die. People claimed that he gasped and convulsed for minutes which made the execution botched. Dennis was convicted for the rape and murder of Joy Stewart and there was DNA evidence to prove his guilt.

8. Romell Broom 

Romell Broom was convicted of raping and kidnapping his victim. In 1985 he was sentenced to death. During his execution on 15th September 2009, the execution team could not find a suitable vein, which botched the execution attempt.

9. John Evans 

John Louis Evans is the ninth person on our list. John Evans was executed by electric chair in Alabama. He was convicted of murder. But his execution was botched because the electric chair malfunctioned and his body burnt up.

10. Jesse Joseph Tafero 

Jesse Joseph Tafero was convicted for the murders of police officers Phillip A. Black and Donald Irwin during a traffic stop. He was executed by electric chair in Florida. But his head caught fire during the execution.
